Laboratory

The laboratory is situated on the second floor of the hospital and allows us to carry out a wide range of tests, in most cases giving us results within a few minutes. We have special veterinary machines newly updated in 2010 to test blood for biochemistry (telling us how major organs in the body are working), haematology (the levels of red and white blood cells), electrolytes (levels of salts in the blood stream) and hormone levels. We use these machines to check the health of animals before operations (pre operative blood tests), to help us make a diagnosis of disease and to help monitor the recovery of patients. The laboratory microscopes allow us to examine samples of skin, urine, faeces and blood for parasites and other abnormalities.

Due to the huge range of potential tests available to animals, not everything can be carried out in our internal laboratory and frequently we may wish to have the benefit of the experience of specialist pathologists and laboratory technicians. For this reason we have close partnerships with several external laboratories. If samples have to be sent away to a laboratory they are sent special delivery ensuring their save delivery and rapid results - usually within 48 hours.
