Theatre

The large theatre can only be accessed from the theatre corridor. Only staff members that are suitably dressed in theatre scrubs, clogs, and hats may enter this area.

There are two main types of surgery we perform. Soft tissue surgery involves dealing with all types of non-bony tissues and involves a large range of procedures from removing small lumps and routine neutering to the removal of large tumours and diseased lung or liver lobes.

Orthopaedic surgery involves the bones of the body and most commonly the repair of fractures and dislocations suffered by pets in accidents. We have a wide selection of different types of orthopaedic equipment allowing us to fix fractures in all types of pet from the smallest of birds to the largest Great Dane.

Other specialist surgical equipment available includes; electrosurgery (for the removal of small growths and control of bleeding during surgery), cryosurgery (the freezing of small growths) and electrolysis (for the removal of damaging extra eye lashes). We also have a surgical microscope to help with magnification in eye surgery and other fine surgical work.

In common with pets under anaesthesia in all areas of the hospital, animals in theatre are constantly monitored whilst under anaesthetic and on recovery. Anaesthetic monitoring includes the use of machines that measure heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. The most important aspect of monitoring is however the use of a trained and designated anaesthesia nurse.
